Summer 2019, Week 2

This summer, we're continuing to include conversation starters, bolded in each section of Edah News.

Kochavim

Kochavim campers had an amazing second moosh week at camp! We enjoyed many fun peulot including fitness, bishul, and lots of migrash dancing. On Wednesday we kicked off our Yom Yisrael celebration with tefillot with Bogrim, where we met our Bogrim buddies who later took us around the shuk. At the shuk we made za’atar, tasted olive oil, and drank limonada (lemonade with mint). We made delicious pita and hummus, decorated beautiful challah covers, and learned about the Kotel with our wonderful shlichim (Israeli staff). We also visited the Jordan River and the Dead Sea where we had a dance party and floated on rafts. The shlichim told us all about where they live in Israel, and we both drew and built models of their homes using cardboard, loose parts, and tape. We are excited for Zimriyah next week and can’t wait to share our songs with you on Wednesday. Ask your camper to share a sneak peak of the Kochavim Zimriyah songs! Shorashim

We had a great second week in Shorashim. We loved exploring Israel during the “all around Israel” activity on Yom Yisrael. Campers visited a kibbutz, played in the snow in the Hermon up north, dove deep into Israel’s history at Beit Guvrin, and floated on the Dead Sea. Ask your camper to share his/her favorite place they visited in Israel. This week we enjoyed omanut (art), ma’ayan (loose parts), low ropes, bishul (cooking), ceramics, bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), drama, sports, and practicing our tefillot. We have also been practicing for Zimriyah and are excited to perform for you on Wednesday. Click here to join our Shorashim Summer 2019 Parents Group on Facebook. Shabbat Shalom from all of us in Shorashim!

Nitzanim

Nitzanim has had an exciting second week! In tefillah (prayers) this week each bunk chanted a different verse of the Birchot Hashachar for the whole edah, as we start each morning with gratitude. We are thankful for another morning, for our strength, and ask for strength for Medinat Yisrael. Ask your camper what s/he is thankful for! We visited archery for the first time as Nitzanim campers. We parted the Red Sea this week in Shiur. Yom Yisrael was a highlight of our week. We went tubing in the Jordan River, created an Israeli flag, and made pita in Bishul Bachutz! Solelim

This week Solelim campers were excited to begin bechira (electives)! Each camper chose an activity s/he will be able to focus on for the entire session. Our staff created and performed a “parsha play” based on this week’s Torah portion, and the campers and counselors had so much fun watching the parsha come to life! We loved visiting the archery area, bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), and the STEM center. A great time was had by all on Yom Yisrael! Chanachim (campers) visited various stations, all with a focus on Israel. They designed their own Israeli flags, and explored the irrigation systems in Israel, and Israeli innovations including Waze. They discussed the amazing success of Eurovision in Israel and even participated in their own Eurovision-style singing performance. Campers made delicious pita and hummus, wrote letters to place in our model Kotel, and attended our own Camp Ramah shuk where they sampled Israeli spices and tasty fruit. Tzeirim

Tzeirim is having an incredible second week of Kayitz 2019! This week we were inspired by Bereshit Spacecraft, an Israeli innovation, and created our own spacecrafts. We decided what items from home we would bring with us if we were travel into space. Ask your camper what s/he would bring on a voyage to space! Yom Yisrael was a highlight of our week. We discovered Israeli inventions that have a positive impact on our environment. We made pita in bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), and began our shabbat projects. We started with making shabbat candles , and we will add to our collection each week. Campers chose their tefillah electives from several options: omanut (art), teva (nature), parsha plays, music, and one-on-one Hebrew with a counselor. Nevonim

Nevonim had another moosh week! In keeping with our edah theme, NevoGREEN , we explored Israeli innovations that take care of our planet and make the world greener. Yom Yisrael was a special day here at camp. Not only did we enjoy all that camp has to offer, we did it with a focus on Israel. We shared what Israel means to each of us individually and on Friday we created our own versions of the Israeli flag. Ask your camper to share with you the design of his/her special Israeli flag. We combined our own flags to create a single Nevonim plaque that will hang on our deck for years to come. In tefillah we emphasized the slach lanu prayer in the Amidah, and discussed the importance of forgiveness and of not only saying “I’m sorry” when we do something wrong, but that we take action to make things right. Nevonim designated an edah mitzvah bracelet that we pass around to commend our peers when they take action to help one another. It has been great getting to know each other and strengthening our edah bond! Chalutzim & Bogrim

Chalutzim and Bogrim had an exciting and busy week! We had a blast on Yom Yisrael participating in a Shark Tank-style peulah. We pitched invention ideas inspired by Israeli innovations to a team of judges. Ask your camper what his/her group invented. On Yom Yisrael we also visited a water station where we used pipes and buckets to simulate the movement of mayim in Israel from higher to lower elevations. We would love to share photos with you of your children in all of our exciting activities and special programs through our Facebook group.
