Summer 2018, Week 2
This summer, we're continuing to include conversation starters,
bolded in each section of Edah News.
Kochavim campers had an amazing second week at camp! We enjoyed tasty treats at bishul (cooking) and bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), we became stronger and more confident swimmers, we loved challenging ourselves at low ropes, and we kept cool on inflatables and at fun water activities all around camp on our Yom Cham (hot day). Yom Adom is coming and we are excited for Zimriyah next week. We have been practicing our songs and can't wait to share them with you on Wednesday. Ask your camper to share a sneak peak of the Kochavim Zimriyah songs! If you haven't yet, please click here to join our Kochavim Korner Summer 2018 Parents Group on Facebook.
We had a great second week in Shorashim. We kept cool and comfortable during this hot week on inflatable slides, sprinklers, and with extra swim periods. We visited mada (science) and explored UV rays using special beads that change color in the sun. We experimented by putting different types of sunscreen on the beads and seeing what worked best. When your camper brings home his/her beads, ask what happens to the beads in the shade and with sunscreen applied. We have been practicing for Zimriyah and are excited to perform for you on Wednesday. Click here to join our Shorashim Summer 2018 Parents Group on Facebook. Shabbat Shalom from all of us in Shorashim!
Nitzanim has had an exciting second week! We had a blast staying cool on the inflatables during the Yom Cham (hot day). In tefillah (prayers) this week each bunk chanted a section of the Ashrei for the whole edah. In mada (science) we discovered the power of UV rays using beads that change color in the sun. Ask your camper to describe what happens when we put sunscreen on the beads! This is our first summer visitng etz (woodworking) and we jumped right into fun projects. We explored Eretz Yisrael this week in Shiur, and even went on an archeological dig! Ask your campers about the irrigation system in Israel! This week Solelim campers were excited to begin bechira (electives)! Each camper chose an activity s/he will be able to focus on for the entire session. Our staff created and performed a "parsha play" based on this week's Torah reading, and the campers and counselors had so much fun watching the parsha come to life! We loved visiting the new archery area, bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking) in its new location, the STEM center, and, of course, plenty of time in the pools and playing water games during the hot days this week. Tzeirim is having an incredible second week of Kayitz 2018! This week we had a special program, Yom Gibborim (Hero Day). We made our own special capes and talked about different Jewish heroes and the qualities that heroes possess. Ask your camper about their favorite Jewish hero! We made potato eggs in bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), began our passport projects in omanut (art), started to make our Shabbat candle boxes in etz (woodworking), and enjoyed the water slides on the Yom Cham (hot day). Campers also chose their tefillah electives from these options: omanut (art), teva (nature), parsha plays, music, and one-on-one Hebrew with a counselor. Nevonim had a special week as we shared the mitzvah of our campers reading Torah for the first time. We are so proud of them, Mazel Tov! In keeping with our edah theme, gibborim (heroes), we had a yom meyuchad- Yom Gibborim. Campers and counselors dressed up in superhero and role model costumes. Throughout our activities- bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), migdal (high ropes), swim, and even on our Yom Cham (hot day)- we shared the many ways that we can be everyday "superheros." Ask your camper to share what makes him/her an everyday hero. It has been great getting to know each other and strengthening our edah bond! Chalutzim and Bogrim had an exciting and busy week! We started our week by welcoming a guest from Furbridge, an animal rescue and community outreach organization. Furbridge runs a foster pet program and raises money for medical care and supplies for fostered pets. They also work with local fire departments to purchase animal oxygen masks for rescue vehicles. You and your family can get involved by asking your local fire department if they have animal masks on their firetrucks. Click here to view the flyers that were shared with your child. We would love to share photos with you of your children in all of our exciting activities and special programs through our Facebook group.
