Summer 2022, Week 2

Nevatim

We had such a great second week in Nevatim! In bishul, campers made Israeli Salad and Rice Krispie snowmen. Campers finished their firefly lanterns in omanut, and in ceramics they made awesome clay creations. We were also busy playing softball, soccer, and tumbling in gymnastics. In Shiur, Nevatim had a scavenger hunt, where they helped their teachers find some lost items and reviewed their Hebrew numbers 1-5. Then, they sorted themselves according to how many of each item they had. Zimriyah rehearsal is going really well, and we can’t wait to perform our songs for you next week! Yom Yisrael has been a very exciting day, and campers have been loving special activities, like water relays, a parade, pita making, and flag decorating.

Kochavim

Kochavim had a nadeer second week at camp! At Park Mada, we drew in different colors and looked through special glasses that made some of the colors disappear. We learned about many different spices and ate them with popcorn in Bishul Bachutz, and in Ma’ayan, we made goo and made new inventions. Our campers enjoyed playing soccer and hockey. In Shiur, Kochavim continued learning about the days of Creation, including depicting what they believe Tohu Va’vohu looked like and having a water relay as Mayim (water) separated from Shamayim (heavens). A big highlight of the week was, of course, Yom Yisrael! We went to the shuk in Shiur and did special Yom Yisrael activities related to Shvil Yisrael. For our peulat edah (division activity) we spoke about inventions from Israel and made our own inventions in Makers using cardboard and special cardboard screws.

Shorashim

What an exciting and busy week our Shorashim campers had! We made delicious popcorn in bishul bachutz. Basketball was especially fun, and campers learned new basketball shooting techniques. This week, we started having different bunks lead tefillah each day. Zimriyah practice is going great, and the Shorashimers learned hand motions for their songs. They can’t wait to perform for all of you next week. In Shiur, Shorashim zoomed in on Noach, learning more about his life with a throwing game, tossing balls into buckets to guess what was true and what was false about him. We enjoyed special Yom Yisrael activities, which included a play about visiting different places in Israel. We are also teaching the campers a song called Eretz Israel Sheli.

Nitzanim

Nitzanim has been very busy this week at camp! Our campers played soccer, basketball, gymnastics and softball. We made Rosh Hashanah dishes in ceramics, made firefly light boxes at omanut, and learned about spices and made popcorn at bishul bachutz. Campers also enjoyed making Israeli salad at bishul. We spent time at Park Mada learning about how we see colors: when we looked through red film, the red on our drawings disappeared, and the same happened with green on green and blue on blue. In Shiur, Nitzanim campers delved into the miraculous nature of the ten plagues, including some sorting games that helped get at the progression of the plagues and why they might have appeared in the order they did. And, of course, we celebrated Yom Yisrael! We watched a skit about all the different places in Israel and also played Israel Bingo!

Solelim

Solelim had an awesome week. Our campers have been working hard to pass the blue and red swim evaluations. They are doing an amazing job! They also played basketball and spent time at migdal. Solelimers have also loved working on our aim at chetz v’keshet (archery), building with trinkets at makers, tracing leaves and molding bowls out of clay in ceramics, and making delicious food at bishul. Talk about a busy week! With Zimriyah just around the corner, we have been practicing our songs and we even added hand motions to do along with our songs. For Yom Yisrael, campers walked into a fully operational Shuk, where they learned about some of the personalities whose faces grace the Israeli Shekel notes before buying limonana (lemonade with mint), rugelach, making their own Zaatar, and building their own Havdalah spice kits!

Tzeirim

Tzeirim campers had a fantastic second week at camp! We had a great time in the pool, and many of our campers passed the blue and red evaluations to swim in deeper water. Migdal was a favorite activity this week. Campers loved the zipline and all the climbing walls. We spent time in robotics at Park Mada, 3D printing key-chains with our campers’ names on them. We also continued our bechirot (electives). Campers each picked their favorite camp activity, which they get to do every other day this session. They had musical tefillah with Amichai for the first time, and they’ve been doing an amazing job learning their Zimriyah songs for next week! Tzeirimers were also so excited to celebrate Yom Yisrael and visit a fully operational shuk, where they learned about shekels and enjoyed limonana (lemonade with mint) and rugelach.

Nevonim

Our Nevonim campers had an amazing second week! We enjoyed lots of camp activities including migdal, bishul bachutz and bishul. Our campers also got to spend time doing all kinds of sports. Some bunk favorites are softball, basketball, and, of course, swim! This was our first Torah reading week. Our readers were terrific and had practiced with their counselors to prepare all week. Nevonimers were especially excited about Yom Yisrael and were excited for the many special peulot (activities). They were able to experience our awesome shuk, bartering and swapping their given commodities (wheat, olive oil, etc.) in order to obtain the goods they wanted (rugelach and limonana!), learning about the history of the ancient marketplace along the way.

Chalutzim & Bogrim

Bogrim campers had a fantastic second week at camp! While we loved doing our typical camp activities like dancing on the migrash, bishul bachutz, and bechira, a real highlight of our week was Yom What’s the Problem! This special day is our own Yom about finding problems we wish to solve in the world. For Yom What’s the Problem, our madrichim (counselors) lead a meaningful conversation about world issues that are important to us. After that, campers brainstormed and came up with their own campaigns for problems they wish to solve and solutions for them. We also did a water conservation relay race to cool off on Thursday! The shuk at Yom Yisrael was also especially exciting, and Bogrim campers learned about the history of the ancient marketplace. They even got to barter their different goods, like wheat and olive oil, for things they wanted.

Sha’ar

We’ve had an achla (amazing) second week of camp!

Sha’ar chanichim and madrichim are using their Hebrew vocabulary during all of their daily peulot (activities): omanut (art), ma’ayan (beading), chetz v’keshet (archery), teva (nature), bishul (cooking), kadoor-sal (basketball), kadoor-regel (soccer), bishul bachutz (outdoor cooking), ceramika (ceramics), rikkud (dancing), tennis, and schiyya b’breicha (swimming in the pool).

Chanichim continued to use their food and meal-related vocabulary as they ask their madrichim for the food they would like to eat for each meal. This week they focused on using a salachat (plate) v’masleg (fork) v’mapit (napkin) to eat the various lunch foods: naknikiyot (hot dogs), macaroni v’gvina (mac ‘n’ cheese), pizza beigelei (pizza bagels), and today for Yom Yisrael, falafel!

Younger campers spent the week practicing words for structures such as bayit (home) and gesher (bridge) as well as various chayot (animals): kelev (dog), chatul (cat), dov (bear) and devorah (bee). Older campers made a special project for Rosh HaShana at ceramics, a rimon (pomegranate), and had more complex conversations about their goals for the summer, all in Hebrew!
