Sha'ar Hebrew Immersion Program

Overview

Boker Tov Machaneh Ramah! Mah Nishma? (Good morning Camp Ramah! How are you?) For decades, children have been greeted with these iconic phrases each morning on the migrash (our main lawn). Ramah Day Camp in Nyack has a proud history of weaving Hebrew language into the day’s activities through the use of cheers, songs, and stories.

In 2013, Ramah Nyack elevated Hebrew learning with the addition of Sha’ar, a unique Hebrew immersion program. We are now proud to offer this popular program in for six edot (age groups): Kochavim, Shorashim, Nitzanim, Solelim, Tzeirim, and Nevonim (entering grades K-5th).

Schedule

Campers in Sha’ar engage in the full Ramah Nyack schedule, including swim, sports, arts and crafts, and more–learning to understand and speak Hebrew by listening to and speaking with their counselors and peers. All aspects of the camp day are conducted solely in Hebrew from the very first day, giving children an opportunity to gain proficiency as they participate in the myriad of activities that make camp so magical!

Staff

Our Rosh Sha’ar (Director of Sha’ar) is a lifetime Ramah camper and staff member who has lived and studied in Israel for over a decade and is a Judaics and Hebrew instructor at a New York City Jewish day school during the school year. Each winter, the Rosh Sha’ar travels to Israel to interview and hand-pick the outstanding Sha’ar counselors, a team of all Israelis who have experience working with young children in various settings. The Sha’ar staff is beloved each summer, radiating warmth and instilling a love and passion for Hebrew in their Sha’ar campers.
